Our Heritage
Introduction
Hospital Radio Lynn has been a cornerstone of community support and entertainment for the patients and staff of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and its predecessors since 1972. Our mission has always been to provide comfort through music and communication, enriching the hospital experience for everyone.
1972-1974
The journey of Hospital Radio Lynn began in 1972 when a group of visionary volunteers recognised the need for a dedicated radio service to uplift the spirits of patients in The General, St. James’, and Hardwick Road Hospitals.
Their dream was realised in 1974 with the generous donation of a prefabricated building by HJ Mallet & Co. This enabled the construction of two studios that were connected to St. James’ Hospital’s distribution system.
The inaugural broadcast, a moment of pride and joy, was hosted by John Law, Mac Mason, and Mike Hutchinson on 17 April 1974.
1975-1989
In December 1979, Hospital Radio Lynn, in collaboration with the King’s Lynn Lion’s Club, launched the King’s Lynn Talking Newspaper. Edited by John Greyson, this venture started with news and carols, quickly becoming a valued resource for the community.
The 1980s saw significant developments, including the move to the newly opened Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 1980, despite the initial space being no larger than a broom cupboard. The station eventually moved into a more suitable Portakabin in 1981, which was outfitted with a studio, news booth, and other essential facilities.
1990-1999
The 90s were a decade of both challenges and triumphs. As the original Portakabin began to decay, securing a new home became a priority. With leadership changes and strong community support, significant funds were raised, and plans for a new studio advanced. Despite a setback with VAT liabilities in 1999, the resilience of our team and community meant that construction could continue, leading to the opening of our new studios in 2000.
2000-2013
The new millennium marked a new chapter for Hospital Radio Lynn with the inauguration of the new studios on our birthday, 17 April 2000. The facilities were officially opened on 30 September by loyal supporters Pam Thrower and Dot Richardson, cementing our role in the community.
2014 - today
Our 40th anniversary in 2014 was a significant milestone, celebrated by honouring our long-serving volunteers.
In 2019, we marked our 45th anniversary at the Sandringham Flower Show, a memorable event as we were on the royal route and met the now King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 posed severe challenges, halting fundraising and on-site volunteering. However, our adaptability shone through as we invested in new equipment to maintain broadcasts and continue supporting our listeners.
